Is America’s Democracy Under Attack?

Trump supporters on Jan. 6 in the U.S. Capitol

In today's Lean to the Left podcast episode, we have an exclusive interview with Peter Sacks, acclaimed author of the new thriller, "Libertyland", which weaves a chilling narrative reminiscent of the January 6th events, mixed with philosophical insights akin to Ayn Rand's exploration of individualism.

An award-winning author and social critic, Sacks has a rich background that ranges from economics to journalism. His thought-provoking books such as "Tearing Down the Gates: Confronting the Class Divide in American Education" and "Standardized Minds: The High Price of America's Testing Culture and What We Can Do to Change It" have garnered accolades, including a Pulitzer Prize nomination.

The Genesis of Libertyland

Sacks began his professional journey as an economist before switching to journalism, a career transition fueled by a desire to connect more deeply with socio-economic dynamics and their interplay with politics. His foray into nonfiction eventually led him to write about the educational system and its class inequalities. This passion for systemic issues eventually inspired him to delve into fiction to explore these concepts more dramatically. Libertyland was thus born.

Libertyland follows Carson McCready, a former Navy SEAL and the prime suspect in a devastating domestic terrorist attack. His journey to clear his name reveals a secret society of libertarian billionaires intent on creating a capitalist utopia, a scenario eerily echoing the political tumult we witness today.

In our interview, Sacks detailed his journey from writing acclaimed nonfiction works to crafting a fictional thriller. His inspiration stemmed from the need to address larger truths through storytelling, hoping to reach a broader audience with impactful narratives.

Themes and Inspirations

The conversation delved into the deeply woven themes within Libertyland. Sacks shared his observations on how Ayn Rand's influence is palpable in today's political landscape, particularly within the Republican party. These ideologies trickle down to his characters, like Garrett Cripps, a billionaire tech mogul with deep-seated libertarian beliefs.

A significant part of the book was penned during the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted to Sacks the extremes of personal freedom. He found it "very childish" how some people prioritized their personal freedom to the detriment of collective well-being. These observations prompted deeper reflections on the concept of freedom, both personal and economic, which are explored through the characters in Libertyland.

Fiction Versus Nonfiction: A Writer's Evolution

Sacks admits the transition to fiction was partly spurred by a setback—an unapproved book proposal on capitalism needing socialism. This idea, however, found new life within the narrative of Libertyland, allowing him to explore socio-economic justice creatively.

“Libertyland," Sacks claims, serves as a literary counterpoint to Ayn Rand's philosophy. The characters and their stories carry forward his lifelong passion for social justice, making complex socio-political arguments more relatable.

Is America's Democracy Under Attack?

The conversation naturally veered towards modern American politics. Sacks explained how economic justice and political integrity have shaped his worldview and how figures like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren symbolize an authentic voice for the working class.

He criticized the Democratic Party for often selecting "electable" candidates over truly progressive ones, which he says undermines the party’s potential to address issues close to the hearts of working Americans.

Peter Sacks discussed the impact of Donald Trump and his MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement on American democracy, expressing concerns about the erosion of civic knowledge among American citizens and the susceptibility to misinformation, exacerbated by Trump's divisive rhetoric and affiliations.

Sacks shared his fears of an autocratic shift if Trump were re-elected, pointing to initiatives like the Republicans' Project 2025.

Is America's democracy under attack? Sacks drew alarming parallels to authoritarian regimes and emphasized the urgent need for a vigilant, informed electorate to uphold democratic values.

Libertyland: A Must-Read

Libertyland has received rave reviews as a page-turner. Sacks hopes the book will serve as a catalyst for deeper reflections on democracy, freedom, and justice in America. "Libertyland" is available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Goodreads.

If you're interested in exploring the philosophical and social intricacies of contemporary America through an engaging narrative, "Libertyland" is a book you should not miss. Dive into Peter Sacks's world and uncover the chilling parallels to our current political landscape.
