In this episode of “Lean to the Left,” we take a look at the complexities of modern liberalism and its challenges in the political landscape with Spencer Critchley, an accomplished writer and political analyst known for his book “Patriots of Two Nations, Why Trump Was Inevitable, and What Happens Next.” Critchley offers insights into the alienation against the Democratic Party.

However, Critchley contends that “Voters actually do not care about policy… They care about how policy makes them feel.”

He argues that understanding and reaching voters’ hearts is crucial. In contrast, Republicans, leveraging their business background, excel in emotional marketing—a concept encapsulated by the classic advertising adage, “You sell the sizzle, not the steak.”

Donald Trump and the Anti-Liberal Right

The conversation turns to Donald Trump’s distinctive political style, which Critchley describes as the antithesis of rational debate. Trump’s success, he argues, lies in his ability to embody a charismatic, almost mythical leader challenging the liberal status quo. Critchley sees Trump as part of a broader anti-liberal right, rejecting the fundamental principles of Enlightenment liberalism.

Critchley urges liberals to discern this reality of divided worldviews, often living within different realities or paradigms. He proposes that understanding this split is pivotal for political engagement and reaffirms that attempts at rational persuasion will fail without recognizing the deep emotional currents at play.

A New Approach to Political Engagement

In his new project, “The Liberal Backbone,” Critchley adopts an interactive approach by sharing draft chapters publicly and inviting feedback. This initiative aims to foster dialogue and collaboratively refine ideas, a process which Critchley finds both a challenge and an opportunity to disseminate his thoughts rapidly.

The podcast provides a critical lens on how liberalism, historically rooted in reason, must adapt to embrace more emotional and visceral connections with the electorate to thrive politically.     1. I originally created the site myself using the Wix platform. After several years, I switched to WordPress, but the design is essentially what I did with Wix. Thanks.

    content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but
    it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the web without
    my permission. Do you know any techniques to help reduce content
    from being stolen? I’d really appreciate it.

    1. I really don’t have any advice for you. In my case, I am a long-time journalist and am extremely conscientious about copyright infringement and plagiarism, making certain that sources are credited appropriately, etc. Much of my content is based on original interviews that I do, so there are few such issues in those instances.

Have never had a problem clearing my head to write. However, before you sit down to write, consider just jotting some bullet points down to highlight what you’d like to say. Then, without wasting any more time start writing. The only way to be a successful writer is to write.
