Stop Using the Chainsaw on Our America

Musk with chainsaw
Elon Musk is taking a chainsaw to the U.S. Government. How can this happen?

Stop Using the Chainsaw on Our America

Eileen Powellby Eileen Powell

We all know staunch supporters of Donald Trump who are good people. They attend church on Sundays, and raise fine, upstanding children who will go on to contribute in positive ways to society. The question, then for most of us who are not Trump supporters is overwhelmingly, how can you support someone who clearly does not share your values?

James Carville famously made the following comment, “It’s the economy stupid.” And that is the only possible reason that begins to make sense to the question of why good people went to the polls and voted to put Trump in the White House for another term.

Trump based his campaign in no small way on his promise, “When I win, I will immediately bring prices down, starting on Day One,”  It has now been better than a month since he took office and the prices are not going down. He lied. That fact should not have come as a surprise to voters, but again, in deference to Trump supporters, they are shielded from knowing the real Donald Trump by Fox News.

The role of Fox News is now, and always has been, to further the political agenda of the far Right. They do this by encouraging the notion that anything negative against Trump that is raised by other news outlets is based on conspiracies against him and is fake news.

When Trump says something outrageous, which is almost every time he opens his mouth, Fox News softens his words by explaining that he really didn’t mean it that way.

Fulfilling the role to quiet concerns of good people and encouraging them to continue to support Trump becomes more difficult for Fox News each day as he now, unleashed, is enacting his plan to dismantle the government as we know it.

Does Elon Musk appearing on stage wielding a chain saw in Washington,  bring the conservative party to mind? Most people realize that, while the image is not an appropriate reflection of our sweet land of liberty, it is an accurate description of what he and Donald Trump are doing to our country.

Next question to supporters, If you are a die-hard Trump supporter, which apparently some of you are, how do you reconcile his total disregard for the hardships his actions are causing to those in his path to what you learn in church on Sundays?

How can you look the other way as large segments of equally good people, maybe some who attend church with you, are now without a paycheck? It is difficult especially knowing that whatever money has been saved from the federal budget with Musk’s chainsaw will serve mainly to protect the tax cuts for the wealthiest, those in the top  1% of our population.

Since Trump took office, 200,000 federal workers from various agencies have been removed from their positions. The sheer numbers suggest that surely, some of them might have created fraud and waste, but probably not all 200,000.

In fact, the president is trying to find a few of them to rehire. For instance the workers who were protecting our nuclear missile site were inadvertently let go as part of the budget excising. Oh, and those trying to find solutions to the bird flu, as well were lost in the fray.

Whoops. Well everyone makes mistakes, too bad the government emails of those let go in error were also deleted and now they don’t know how to contact them. Could there be a few more errors in the Trump-Musk chainsaw method of reducing government? What are the odds?

Those of you who are Republican and conservative do not need to change your allegiance to the party in which you believe. You need simply to remember that you are American and a human being first.

The Republican Party as you knew it did not ask you to stand by and watch people suffer at the hands of its leader. Trump is not the Republican Party. He is someone who promised revenge on everyone who ever offended him. He is living out his dream at the expense of our hard-won liberties. No, our country is not perfect, but it is so much better than what will be left when Trump completes his plan for his future.

Trump and his boss, Elon Musk, must stop using the chainsaw on our America.
